During recent school holidays in Uganda, the Cotton On Foundation partnered with the National Curriculum Development Centre and USAID to conduct teacher training programs for over 300 teachers from our central and outreach Primary Schools. Teachers volunteered their own time for six days to attend professional development workshops covering literacy development and classroom based assessment.
Workshops were held in the newly constructed multipurpose hall at St. Bernard’s Secondary School in Mannya village (which is also a Cotton On Foundation funded project and a fantastic new space for large community gatherings such as these training sessions).
During the training, teachers were gifted reference books which specifically relate to Uganda’s literacy program to take home and continue to study. In addition, the Cotton On Foundation supplied new literary materials, including 4,000 books and accompanying educational posters to 18 central and outreach primary schools in the region.
Good teachers inspire hope and instill a love of learning in their students. So this is why, the Cotton On Foundation’s global development work extends far beyond the construction of classrooms. Not only is our mission to establish 20,000 educational places in Southern Uganda by 2020 but we’re passionate about delivering a quality education. This includes attracting and supporting the best teachers possible in the remote communities Ugandan we partner with.
Kevin Higgins, Cotton On Foundation’s Education Specialist, has been working to deliver significant projects focused on Teacher training.
“Through the provision of hundreds of quality literacy and numeracy resources coupled with ongoing teacher training, we are on the right path to ensuring quality education in Southern Uganda. It’s an exciting time to be involved and I’m really proud of the outcomes and what has been achieved already in such a short space of time”
The Cotton On Foundation Teacher Training programs are ongoing, with numeracy being the next area of focus and similar resources provided to the teachers each time.
Thanks to the continued support of our Cotton On Group retail teams and customers, the Cotton On Foundation is proud to be supporting teachers and inspiring students of today.
