$1 MILLION RAISED FOR GLOBAL INITIATIVES TO KEEP GIRLS IN SCHOOL
Across Cotton On Foundation supported regions and beyond, girls face a range of barriers to accessing a quality education. Whether that be a lack of leadership opportunities, financial barriers or even trouble accessing sanitary products, we’re committed to removing the roadblocks that prevent girls from reaching their full potential.
We recently celebrated our Together for Her campaign in partnership with Girl Up, and we couldn’t be more proud of the results!
An initiative of the UN Foundation, Girl Up is a global movement of young women leaders who defend gender equality. With a goal of raising AUD $1 million in just three and a half weeks, together we committed to support global programs that keep girls in school by promoting leadership programs in Uganda to reach 2,000 girls.
The partnership kicked off on September 22, with Cotton On Foundation’s Project Operations Manager Sarah Spiker taking the stage at the United Nations Social Good Summit in New York City. Speaking to an audience of thousands, Sarah highlighted the importance of educating girls, for the good of everyone.
“We need to remember that education is a fundamental human right. It’s not a privilege”— Sarah Spiker
“It’s only once we’ve made education accessible to all that we’ll really be able to tackle in a sustainable way, the big issues that we face in our world… We can create a world that is equal and prosperous, and we can do this together for her”.
Along with the proceeds raised, we aimed to raise awareness about the barriers that prevent girls from going to and staying in school by asking people to pick one of three pledges on our website. Overall, we received:
- 806 pledges for the Girl Up Leadership Summit in Uganda
- 1082 pledges for sanitary pad distribution
- 904 pledges for access to scholarships
And of course, we are so happy to announce that with the support of our incredible team and customers, we were able to smash our $1M goal, raising an amazing AUD $1,034,936!
At the heart of the partnership is the launch of the first ever Girl Up Leadership Summit in Uganda, to be held in January. We’ll be in attendance, and we can’t wait to share it with you! Make sure you follow us on Instagram at @cottononfoundation for all the highlights!
